The Olfactory Time Machine

When I was between five and nine years of age I lived in Rochester, New York . Rochester was (and still is) the home of Highland Park , a spectacular Victorian era arboretum and botanical garden. The lilac is the primary focus of the park.

Nothing conjures the spirit of the distant past like an associated smell. One smell of a lilac and instantly it is a warm spring day in 1960 and I am with my family again.
